1. Jeremiah 23:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why are the days coming when the people will no longer speak of the Lord who brought them up out of Egypt?

Jeremiah 23:7 (ESV)

7 “Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when they shall no longer say, ‘As the LORD lives who brought up the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’

These words are also recorded in Jeremiah 16:14–15. They speak of the Lord doing something even greater than when he brought Israel out of Egypt. The Lord revealed his character in a very clear way when he acted powerfully to save his people from slavery. Oaths taken in Israel were based on the character of this God who had shown himself to be merciful and full of unfailing covenant love. But now he will act in an even more powerful way to reveal even more of his gracious character when he brings all of Israel out of the north country and out of all the countries where he had driven them. This second exodus was to be an even greater and more powerful act of mercy, saving his people not just from political exile, but ultimately from spiritual exile. Once again, this promise has been fulfilled with the coming of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah. It is in Christ that the Lord has most clearly and fully revealed his grace and love, not just to Israel, but to people from every nation. This is a people who will one day dwell in their own land, a land secured by the Lord’s king. This land is the new heavens and new earth.
