Lamentations 3:34–36 (ESV)

A listener to Jeremiah’s words in verse 33 could answer, “Yes, the Lord may not enjoy afflicting us, but has he seen what people have done to us?” Judah’s prisoners were handled in inhumane ways. Among them were small children and young men and women (Lamentations 1:4, Lamentations 1:18). In God’s own city, therefore, before his eyes, people were robbed, killed, and raped. There was no sense of right. It is no wonder that the Judeans asked, Did the Lord not see these things?
