Commentary on 1 Kings 11:40 (Summary)

1 Kings 11:40 (ESV)

40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled into Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon.

1 Kings 11:40 returns the focus to Solomon. It shows that his heart had not been humbled by the Lord's pronouncement of judgment. He sought to kill the man whom God had chosen to govern the northern tribes after his death. In this he followed the example of Saul in Saul’s persecution of David.

We may also infer the disobedience of Jeroboam here. How did Solomon decide that Jeroboam was a threat to him? There is no record of the Lord informing Solomon to whom he would give the northern tribes. Jeroboam may have started to rebel, for let us remember that when we are first introduced to this man, we are told that he lifted up his hand against the king (presumably King Solomon). This took place even though God told him that the kingdom would not be torn away in Solomon’s lifetime. Both men show their disobedience, which does not bode well for either Israel or Judah in the future.
