1 Kings 11:39 return to a disclosure of what the Lord is going to do to David’s descendants. He will afflict them. Affliction is the description that the Pentateuch uses to speak of the persecution of the Hebrews in Egypt. It is, therefore, a serious kind of punishment, but not a fatal one. The Lord continues to mitigate this judgment by declaring that it will not last forever.
