Commentary on 1 Kings 10:13 (Summary)

1 Kings 10:13 (ESV)

13 And King Solomon gave to the queen of Sheba all that she desired, whatever she asked besides what was given her by the bounty of King Solomon. So she turned and went back to her own land with her servants.

1 Kings 10:13 concludes the account of the visit of the queen of Sheba to Solomon. It appears from the language of the text, though there is some obscurity, that Solomon, in addition to showing his wisdom to her, gave the queen other valuable gifts. Some of the gifts seemed to have been given at her request and others out of the king’s generosity. The queen, however, did not stay permanently in Jerusalem or Israel, but we are told that she returned to her own country along with her servants.

Though there are legends in Ethiopia and other places that the queen had a son of whom Solomon was the father, there is absolutely nothing in the text in this account that would give any credence to such a supposition. And such a legend does not do credit to the memory of either Solomon or the queen of Sheba.
