Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God
(Romans 5:9). In this passage the word blood
(haima) is used to indicate the death of Christ. His death unlocked the salvific power of his sacrificial blood. Paul would have derived this word, which is not normally used to describe a person’s death, from Jesus’ own words that he spoke during the Last Supper (this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins,
Matthew 26:28). Having been acquitted by virtue of Christ’s sacrifice, we will be saved by him from the wrath of God.
