1. Romans 3:1–2 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does Paul address a Gentile audience with regard to the issue of circumcision?

Romans 3:1–2 (ESV)

1 Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision?

In Romans 3:1 the apostle himself raises the question that may have naturally occurred to his Gentile-Christian readers. The gospel led them to obedience to the law of Israel’s God and they learned to accept the Messiah that came out of Israel. In that way they were brought closer to Israel. It is likely that they admired the old nation and its morals, as they were worthy of respect. So their question, Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision? is understandable. Paul hastens to assure his readers (Romans 3:2) that in many aspects, Israel has advantages over other nations. In the first place God entrusted his stories about his actions and his utterances to them.1
