Jesus makes it clear that the temple with all its various courts and precincts will come to ruin. It will be destroyed. The prophets Jeremiah (Jeremiah 7:12–14; Jeremiah 26:6, Jeremiah 26:18) and Micah (Micah 3:12) warned the people of Israel that the temple would be destroyed if there was apostasy. Some of Jesus’ sectarian contemporaries also predicted the same (for example, The Testament of Levi).1 Jesus’ prediction would come to pass in AD 70 when the Romans besieged the city of Jerusalem and destroyed the temple.2
2 But he answered them, “You see all these, do you not? Truly, I say to you, there will not be left here one stone upon another that will not be thrown down.”
