Forgiveness of sins can be proclaimed on the basis of the work that Jesus has done.1 When he was crucified, he bore the wrath of God against the sins of all God’s people. He was able to do so because he did not commit any sin of his own. He was the righteous one who could die for the unrighteous (1 Peter 3:18).
