Jesus was convicted and condemned as a blasphemer (see Matthew 26:62–66; Luke 22:66–71). Despite the regular reading and hearing of Scripture, the Jews in Jerusalem did not understand how prophecies relate to Jesus (Isaiah 53:3; Psalm 118:22), and they did not accept that he was the Messiah.1 When they killed Jesus, they subsequently fulfilled the prophecies about him.
27 For those who live in Jerusalem and their rulers, because they did not recognize him nor understand the utterances of the prophets, which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled them by condemning him.
