Who were the judges?

Acts 13:20 (ESV)

20 All this took about 450 years. And after that he gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.

Judges were military leaders sent by God to liberate Israel from their enemies and give guidance to his people. Samuel was the last judge and the first official prophet (see 1 Samuel 3:20; Acts 3:24).1
