Why were people gathered in the house of Mary?

Acts 12:12 (ESV)

12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.

It is possible that the gathering was a regular early morning meeting for church members (see Acts 2:46–47). Alternatively, it was a special meeting in which the church came to pray specifically for Peter, conscious of the fact that he would be facing trial later that day.1
