What were the Jewish people anticipating?

Acts 12:11 (ESV)

11 When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.”

The Jewish people were likely hoping that Peter would be publicly convicted as a criminal/heretic so that he can be executed like James. They are opposed to the apostles and the news which they have been proclaiming that Jesus is the Christ. As such, the Jewish people are also opposed to God since they do not submit to his Messiah.1
