Why did Saul and Barnabas go to the Jewish synagogues?

Acts 13:5 (ESV)

5 When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. And they had John to assist them.

The Jewish synagogues would be a natural starting place for gospel preaching when visiting a city. The Jews already had access to and were familiar with the Old Testament Scriptures. They were looking forward to the coming of the Messiah. Since Saul was a well-trained scholar with lots of Jewish connections, he would have been welcomed by the synagogue and given a chance to teach.1 The fact that mention is made of many synagogues suggests that there was a large Jewish community in the region.2 This would also imply that they stayed in the city for a longer period of time, possibly several weeks.3
