Why does Cornelius fall at Peter’s feet in reverence?

Acts 10:25 (ESV)

25 When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him.

The Greek word translated as reverence is elsewhere translated as worship. It is very possible that Cornelius considers Peter to be divine (see Acts 14:11–15);1 alternatively, he is simply acknowledging that Peter is a special person and seeking to pay him appropriate honour.2
