How did Saul grow more and more powerful?

Acts 9:22 (ESV)

22 But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Christ.

While it is possible that the strengthening of Saul could refer to his physical recovery following his fast,1 it is much more likely that it relates to his increasing confidence and ability to proclaim Jesus as the Christ. The Greek verb used for becoming strong denotes the inward strengthening of the Holy Spirit (see Ephesians 6:10; Philippians 4:13; 2 Timothy 4:17).2
