Why does Jesus say that Saul is persecuting him?

Acts 9:4 (ESV)

4 And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?”

The question of the voice from the light implies an equivalence between the people of the Way and Jesus Christ. As Saul persecutes followers of Jesus, he is opposing Jesus himself (Luke 10:16; Matthew 10:40; Matthew 25:35–40, Matthew 25:42–45).1
