Exodus 6:9 (ESV)

9 Moses spoke thus to the people of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because of their broken spirit and harsh slavery.

You could be so engulfed by your miserable circumstances that you have no eyes anymore for God’s promises and his nearness. Observe the attitude of Job’s wife: why would you expect anything from God anymore (Job 2:9)?

This is not strange, as it says in Romans 8:20, For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope.

But the circumstances are not what drives us; they are subjected to God, the King of creation—a creation which sighs and suffers in birth pains—and he will deliver us. In Romans 8:24 we read, For in this hope we were saved.

That is why we are not driven by circumstances. Nothing can separate us from the love of Christ, not tribulation, distress or persecution, hunger or poverty, danger or the sword (Romans 8:35, Romans 8:39).
