1. Judges 21:25 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does the final verse of the book affirm?

Judges 21:25 (ESV)

25 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.

The final verse is that powerful, haunting, damning refrain, In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. This is the theme of the book. Israel has refused to recognize the Lord as their King. Nothing about the preceding events is right in the Lord’s eyes. In their depravity, idolatry, and autonomy, they have become Canaan, a law to themselves. And the results…well, the book speaks for itself, doesn’t it? The results are disastrous.
