1. Jeremiah 14:22 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why do they ask if there are “any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain”?

Jeremiah 14:22 (ESV)

22 Are there any among the false gods of the nations that can bring rain? Or can the heavens give showers? Are you not he, O LORD our God? We set our hope on you, for you do all these things.

Once again, these questions imply a negative answer. It is only the Lord who can bring rain and end the drought and only the Lord can save his people from the devastation of a foreign invasion. The false gods of the nations can do none of these things. Judah’s only hope is the Lord who does all things. This expression of faith in the Lord as the one true God, who is faithful and able to save, ends the lament. Sin confessed and the Lord’s character acknowledged, the people waited for his word of deliverance.1 But a nation that continues to run to false gods for hope and salvation should not expect the Lord to be their source of hope.
