1. Jeremiah 14:14 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

What does the Lord say about what these prophets say?

Jeremiah 14:14 (ESV)

14 And the LORD said to me: “The prophets are prophesying lies in my name. I did not send them, nor did I command them or speak to them. They are prophesying to you a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds.

The Lord’s response makes it clear that these prophets have spoken lies in my name. He did not send them, command them or speak to them. Their message is simply a lying vision, worthless divination, and the deceit of their own minds. The words used to describe the source of their message suggests an origin that goes beyond just deceitful human minds, but to the father of lies himself, the great deceiver who twists the Lord’s promises (Genesis 3:1–5).
