Comparing Judah’s worship of false gods to an act of shameful adultery has been a common theme in Jeremiah’s preaching and it is repeated here. Three graphic words describe this behaviour: adulteries,
neighings
(of a horse in heat as in Jeremiah 2:24), and lewd whorings.
These words not only describe the blatant treachery of Judah towards the Lord but also the fact that this unfaithfulness involved acts of sexual immorality. The Lord sees it all and it is an abomination
to him and means woe
to the people of Judah because the Lord is finally going to pour out his judgment on them.
27 I have seen your abominations, your adulteries and neighings, your lewd whorings, on the hills in the field. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will it be before you are made clean?”
