This short passage (Jeremiah 13:15–17) seems to be an independent piece of writing, but it has been added after the symbolic act and parable of Jeremiah 13:1–14 because it continues the theme of Judah’s pride
and the consequences of her stubborn unfaithfulness.1 The Hebrew word translated as proud
is gaba, and it means to be high, haughty.
Jeremiah is condemning a people who have such a high opinion of themselves that they do not see the need to listen to any warning.2 The two verbs hear
(sama) and give ear
(hezin) are synonyms and they strengthen one another and highlight the urgent need for Judah to repent of her stubborn pride by listening to the Lord.3
15 Hear and give ear; be not proud, for the LORD has spoken.
