1. Jeremiah 11:15 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why can “sacrificial flesh” no longer “avert” doom from Judah?

Jeremiah 11:15 (ESV)

15 What right has my beloved in my house, when she has done many vile deeds? Can even sacrificial flesh avert your doom? Can you then exult?

The Lord asks the question, Can even sacrificial flesh avert your doom? Can you then exult? The people find themselves in the temple, where the Lord says they no longer belong (Jeremiah 11:15a), offering sacrifices, that the Lord now says have no meaning or value. The mere act of offering a sacrifice in the temple, even if it is done according to the reforms Josiah brought about in temple worship, are worthless when offered by faithless people. Their sacrifices no longer speak of atonement and reconciliation before the Lord. They claim to be exulting the Lord in their worship, but the Lord says their exultation is false because their worship is false.
