What is the extent of Benjamin’s victory?

Judges 20:21 (ESV)

21 The people of Benjamin came out of Gibeah and destroyed on that day 22,000 men of the Israelites.

Despite Israel’s eagerness for the attack, the vastly outnumbered Benjamites destroyed 22,000 Israelites that day. That is almost one Israelite for every Benjamite that went out into the field.1 At the same time, it is only 5.5 percent of Israel’s total fighting force (see Judges 20:17).2
