How does the assembly neglect its responsibility?

Judges 20:8 (ESV)

8 And all the people arose as one man, saying, “None of us will go to his tent, and none of us will return to his house.

The assembly does not have enough sense to ask, Do we have any witnesses to this crime? Rather, all the people arose as one man, and in effect render a guilty verdict. They do so without hearing the accused, without summoning Benjamin to cross-examine the testimony, and without consulting the Lord. This is self-styled justice.
