Why would their bones be spread before the sun, moon and all the hosts of heaven?

The bones that were going to be removed from their graves would be spread before the sun and the moon and all the host of heaven, which they have loved and served, which they have gone after, and which they have sought and worshiped. Yet more of Judah’s distorted worship is being exposed. It was common practice in the days of Manasseh for the people of Judah to worship heavenly bodies (2 Kings 21:3). This false worship was never truly removed from among the Lord’s people (see Ezekiel 8:16) .¹ The phrase the bones of is repeated five times in Jeremiah 8:1 and now in Jeremiah 8:2 there is a fivefold repetition describing Judah’s false worship: loved, served, gone after, sought, and worshiped. The judgement Judah experiences is directly linked to their worship of false gods.² The foolishness of their false worship is also made clear. The prophet’s words scoff at the idea that the heavenly bodies they worshipped and went after look down completely unconcerned for the people of Judah.³ They are after all empty, powerless, false gods. To replace the Lord with them was utter folly.
