1. Jeremiah 7:32 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why will the Valley of the Son of Hinnom be called the Valley of Slaughter?

Jeremiah 7:32 (ESV)

32 Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when it will no more be called Topheth, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere.

This detestable evil in Topheth will not escape the Lord’s judgment. The day will come when the place’s name will change to the Valley of Slaughter, for they will bury in Topheth, because there is no room elsewhere. The terrifying irony for Judah is that the place where they committed the evil of human sacrifice will become the place where they will bury their own dead in numbers because of the Lord’s judgment.1 This overflow of burials is a result of the Lord sending the invading force from the north to pour out his judgment on Judah. The devastating impact of this invasion is further described in the following two verses (Jeremiah 7:33–34).
