The Lord’s judgment would be poured out on this place,
referring to the temple in which they trusted and to the whole land, man and beast, trees of the field and fruit of the ground. His anger will burn and not be quenched.
This description of the Lord’s judgment has echoes of the apocalyptic language of the undoing of creation that was used in Jeremiah 4:23–28.
While the people thought they were just kindling fires on rooftops (Jeremiah 7:18), they were in fact kindling a far more serious fire for themselves – the Lord’s wrath will not be extinguished, but will consume them.

20 Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, my anger and my wrath will be poured out on this place, upon man and beast, upon the trees of the field and the fruit of the ground; it will burn and not be quenched.”
