Why do the people “love to have it so”?

Jeremiah 5:31 (ESV)

31 the prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule at their direction; my people love to have it so, but what will you do when the end comes?

The apostasy and failure in Judah were complete. It was not just the prophets and priests, but the people themselves loved to have it so. For a population that had sunk into daily evil and disobedience to the Lord, it was very comforting to not be reproved by a prophet or reproached by a priest.1 In fact, the only reason why the immoral actions of the ruling elite could continue is because the people had no interest in correcting them.2 The whole of society in Judah had bought into the illusion that it was acceptable to pay lip service to the Lord and to support the religious reforms without a deep, heartfelt commitment to the Lord in daily life.3
