Why are the invaders “like keepers of a field”?

Jeremiah 4:17 (ESV)

17 Like keepers of a field are they against her all around, because she has rebelled against me,declares the LORD.

Jeremiah uses yet another image to describe the besiegers from the north. The image was a well-known one of booths that shepherds and farmers set up to guard their flocks and crops.1 This seemingly peaceful image speaks of the invaders deliberate and careful thoroughness as they completely surround the cities of Judah. As effectively as a farmer would protect his crops and flocks, so careful is the enemy in surrounding Judah, not to protect, but to destroy (see Jeremiah 1:13–15).2 The Lord once again confirms the reason for the invasion: Because she (Judah) has rebelled against me.
