Why do the people say they will come to the Lord their God?

Jeremiah 3:23 (ESV)

23 Truly the hills are a delusion, the orgies on the mountains. Truly in the LORD our God is the salvation of Israel.

Jeremiah’s liturgy of repentance has begun with the call in Jeremiah 3:22 for Judah to return to the Lord and the promise of healing. In Jeremiah 3:22–25, Jeremiah now gives the people the words of the ideal response to the invitation in the form of a psalm of repentance. This is what true repentance should look like.

The psalm begins with the people declaring that they come to the Lord because he is the Lord our God. This is an acknowledgement that the Lord is sovereign over them and that their rebellion against him has ended as they pledge loyalty to him.1 This acknowledgement is crucial because in the past they had failed to recognize the Lord as their one true God and had turned to false gods instead.2
