The return and restoration that Jeremiah speaks of in Jeremiah 3:1–25 is not just a matter of external religion or even moral renewal brought about by human effort. Something much deeper is needed, something only the Lord can do and is willing to do. The Lord is presented here as the divine physician who will heal your faithlessness.
Judah’s returning to the Lord in repentance is only possible because of the Lord’s ability and willingness to heal them. This healing is described more fully in Jeremiah 30:1–33:26, and the central aspect is the new covenant in which the Lord will deal with their sin and write his law on their hearts (Jeremiah 31:31–34). Ultimately, this promise of healing is fulfilled in the new covenant brought about by the death and resurrection of Christ.
