One of the great expectations of the nation announced by the prophets (Hosea 3:5; Micah 2:12) was the reunion of the divided kingdom. There would come a time when all that harmed the unity and well-being of the Lord’s chosen people would be removed and they would be restored to a state of peace (shalom) under the rule of the Lord’s Messiah (Isaiah 11:1–16; Ezekiel 37:1–28; Zechariah 8:1–23) with all divisions done away with (Hosea 1:11; Isaiah 11:12–14; Ezekiel 37:15–28).1 Jeremiah speaks of this day as part of the promised restoration. The Lord will bring his people, both northern Israel and Judah, back from exile from the land of the north to the land I gave your fathers as a heritage.
This restoration of divided Israel is also ultimately fulfilled through the death and resurrection of the true descendant of David who is a king after the Lord’s own heart
(Jeremiah 3:15). Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, the Lord will unite northern Israel and Judah as part of his international people as he brings them back, not just from physical exile, but more importantly, from spiritual exile.
18 In those days the house of Judah shall join the house of Israel, and together they shall come from the land of the north to the land that I gave your fathers for a heritage.
