How exactly can the high priest deal with sinners?

Hebrews 5:2 (ESV)

2 He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness.

The verb used here does not appear anywhere else in the Bible. The term is known from Stoic philosophy. It means to exercise forbearance, to be mild. The high priest knows how to temper his feelings of indignation against sin and to be lenient towards the sinner. While not condoning sin, he can understand it.1
