Why does Jesus refer to building practices in order to teach?

Matthew 7:24 (ESV)

24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

It is very possible that Jesus had experience in house construction work (Matthew 13:55; Mark 6:3). As a result, he would be very familiar with the requirements for building foundations, and he builds on this experience in his illustration.
