Why would Jesus compare bread to a stone?

9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone?

It is possible that a loaf of bread at the time was baked in such a way that it could resemble a smooth round stone. In such an instance, to give someone a stone instead of bread is to play a cruel trick upon them.1
