Why does Jesus refer to the speck in a brother’s eye?

Matthew 7:3 (ESV)

3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye?

The fact that Jesus talks of a brother affirms that he has the community of faith in mind. His teaching on judgment is particularly relevant for life in God’s church/the kingdom community.1
