Commentary on Luke 17:13 (Summary)

Luke 17:13 (ESV)

13 and lifted up their voices, saying, “Jesus, Master, have mercy on us.”

With loud voices—remember, they stood at a distance—they call out to Jesus. They say his name and add a word that shows that they regard him highly. They acknowledge him as someone who has more power than anyone else. If there is someone who is able to heal them, it surely is Jesus. Let this mighty man have mercy on them.

In the ages after this, the Greek word eleison (have mercy, compassion) has become a well-known word in many songs. Certainly, an expression such as Kyrie eleison, which refers to King, Lord, has often been sung by Christians. In these words we find the same plea as those ten men once called out to Jesus. Mighty Lord, have mercy on us. This is how we, just as they did, look in full expectation to Jesus.
