That John fell down to worship
was indeed most fitting, except that his worship was directed to the wrong address. If, after the Lamb had taken the scroll from God’s hand, the creatures before God’s throne fell down before the Lamb
and if at that point every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea
exalted the Lamb (Revelation 5:7–14), it surely was only proper that John should join in worship! That is the more so given that John has seen more than the creatures of Revelation 5 had seen: John has seen details of what would happen after Christ has opened the seals of the scroll. But the one to worship is he who prepared the scroll, that is, who determined what must soon take place.
The problem was that John fell down to worship at the feet of the angel
(as he also did in Revelation 19:10).
8 I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who showed them to me,
