Why does Jesus identify money as another master?

Matthew 6:24 (ESV)

24 “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Money is a resource that enables a person to find a measure of comfort and security in this world. If you have lots of money, you can buy the clothes you want, you can live in the house of your choice, you can pay doctors to look after you if you fall ill, and you can procure all the food you need. It is very tempting therefore to focus life on gaining as much money as possible. It is an idol which we are all naturally drawn to serve.1
