On the first and last day of the week, the Hebrews were required to abstain from ordinary work
(kǒlmᵉlě’ḵěṯ ‛ªḇōḏāh). These Hebrew terms are not synonymous. The term mᵉlā’ḵāh refers to the work that is highly skilled. The term ‛ǎḇōḏāh refers to physical labour. These two words seem to form a merism in which all types of work are envisioned (also Leviticus 23:7, Leviticus 23:8, Leviticus 23:21, Leviticus 23:35, Leviticus 23:36).
8 But you shall present a food offering to the LORD for seven days. On the seventh day is a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work.”
