God begins this section with the formula of self-identification, I am the Lord your God.
The Lord had made this proclamation numerous times during the nation’s deliverance from Egypt (Exodus 6:2; Exodus 12:12). It is also found in the introduction to the 10 Commandments (Exodus 20:2). By using this phrase, the Lord points out the basis of this law. It is grounded in the very character of God.
