A second reason to centralize Israelite worship is because of Hebrew idolatry. Some books of history allude to the Hebrews making offerings to goat gods, or goat demons (2 Chronicles 11:15). This activity is prohibited for the Hebrews by the First Commandment in Exodus 20:3. Many of these idolatrous deities of the ancient Near East were gods of fertility.
7 So they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices to goat demons, after whom they whore. This shall be a statute forever for them throughout their generations.
