Divided into three sections (23:1-14; 15-18; 19-28), 1 Samuel 23 continues the story of David’s flight from Saul. It is bookended by two accounts of betrayal with the encouragement of Jonathan standing in the centre. 1 Of particular interest is the contrast between the decision making of Saul and David. Saul is happy to go on his own wisdom whereas David is eager to hear the voice of the LORD2
1 Now they told David, “Behold, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are robbing the threshing floors.”
