What is the meaning of the phrase "give them into your hands"?

Joshua 10:8 (ESV)

8 And the LORD said to Joshua, “Do not fear them, for I have given them into your hands. Not a man of them shall stand before you.”

This is a stereotypical phrase meaning that God has placed Israel’s enemies under their control. God hands over the enemy to Israel five times in this chapter (Joshua 10:8, Joshua 10:12, Joshua 10:19, Joshua 10:30, Joshua 10:32).1
