Commentary on 1 Chronicles 8:29–40

1 Chronicles 8:29–40 (ESV)

29 Jeiel the father of Gibeon lived in Gibeon, and the name of his wife was Maacah.

The rest of chapter 8 deals with the Benjamites centred in Gibeon. The concluding genealogy fits the pattern of the previous groupings in that the key figure is mentioned near the middle of the family list, namely the figure of Saul who divides this genealogy into two parts: the period up to Saul and his four sons (1 Chronicles 8:29–32), and twelve generations from Saul’s son Jonathan (1 Chronicles 8:33–40).1 With minor differences, 1 Chronicles 8:29–38 is repeated in the parallel passage recording the genealogy of Saul, in 1 Chronicles 9:35–44.2 The genealogy starts with references to locations. Jeiel the son of Gibeon should be understood as Jeiel the founder of Gibeon (see 1 Chronicles 8:35).
