1. Hebrews 2:7 (ESV)
  2. Exposition

Why does the author cite from the Greek Bible (Septuagint)?

Hebrews 2:7 (ESV)

7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels; you have crowned him with glory and honor,

The Hebrew original text of Psalm 8:5 is translated as, “You have made him a little lower than God.” The expression “little lower than God” can also be translated from Hebrew as, “You have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings.” The Greek Bible has chosen this possibility and translated it: “You made him lower than the angels.” This rendition of the text helps the author of Hebrews with the keyword “angels” that he would like to use in his discourse.1
