In their action of placing the ark in the Most Holy Place, the priests are being obedient to the divine instructions for its location. Ordinarily, only the high priest could enter this part of the temple once a year on the Day of Atonement. But the very physical requirement regarding the transportation of the ark made it necessary for more than him to enter the inner sanctuary to set it in its place. Regarding this, it ought to be noted that when they set the ark there, the temple was not dedicated and the glory cloud had not yet descended, witnessing God’s presence in his house.
6 Then the priests brought the ark of the covenant of the LORD to its place in the inner sanctuary of the house, in the Most Holy Place, underneath the wings of the cherubim.
