Moses' address now goes back to those who had been barred from entering the Promised Land because of their sin. They were to head toward the desert and the Red Sea; in other words, they were to go the way by which they had come. Their journey thereby no longer goes ahead, but in retreat.
40 But as for you, turn, and journey into the wilderness in the direction of the Red Sea.’
